Role Purpose & Scope

The Health & Safety Manager is a key function within the organisation, ensuring ongoing safe working environments across operations. The role ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation and supports continual improvement in H&S standards. Responsibilities include implementing policies, conducting inspections, managing risk assessments, maintaining the H&S culture, and following through on action and improvement ideas.

Key Accountabilities

Headline Roles and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the practical implementation, training, and support of all staff in health and safety practices, risk assessments, legislation compliance, and environmental regulations.
  • Support and improve environmental management plans and policy.
  • Support and improve health and safety management systems.
  • Oversee risk audits and assessments to identify risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop, implement, and review internal health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Record results of risk assessments and manage and monitor the information.
  • Provide relevant advice and support internally in relation to health and safety procedures, regulations, and legislation.
  • Maintain a safe and compliant work environment, ensuring employees have adequate training and accurate records.
  • Work closely with installation partners to ensure best practice and compliance with SOPs.
  • Support the Site Operations team with installer H&S training.
  • Liaise with external auditors and regulatory bodies when required.
  • Produce and issue bi-weekly H&S bulletins.
  • Chair monthly ESH meetings and run premises inspections.
  • Provide monthly reporting at board level.
  • Travel to sites and suppliers as required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable management instruction.
Risk Management and Compliance
  • Lead and review risk assessments including RAMS, HAVS, noise, COSHH, and workshop/manufacturing activities.
  • Ensure legal compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act, Construction Regulations, COSHH, and other statutory requirements.
  • Support teams in preparing method statements, safe systems of work, and project-specific safety plans.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, inductions, and awareness sessions.
  • Promote a culture of safety, responsibility, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and issue safety communications, memos, and alerts.
Safety Monitoring and Inspections
  • Conduct regular site, workshop, and office inspections.
  • Oversee contractor and subcontractor safety compliance and review RAMS and control measures.
  • Monitor waste control, fire safety arrangements, and emergency procedures.
  • Run H&S committee meetings and follow through on action items.
Incident and Investigation Management
  • Undertake thorough investigations and produce clear reports with recommendations.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis and reporting.
  • Provide recommendations to prevent recurrence and track corrective actions.

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience

Essential
  • Experience in the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, EN 1090, and construction product governance.
  • Understanding of the Building Safety Act and compliance obligations.
  • Experience undertaking complex investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Experience with audits, investigations, and preventive controls.
  • CSCS card (SMSTS/SSSTS preferred).
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong knowledge of UK H&S legislation and industry standards.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, inspections, and investigations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
Desirable
  • Experience with construction procedures.
  • Experience in balcony or façade products.
  • Accident and incident investigation experience.
  • Report writing from investigation exercises.
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or working toward).
  • First aid or fire marshal training.
  • IOSH Managing Safely.
  • ISO14001 and ISO45001 auditor training.
