Role Purpose & Scope

The Health & Safety Officer is a key function within the organisation, ensuring ongoing safe working environments across Sapphire’s operations. The role ensures compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation and supports continual improvement in H&S standards. Responsibilities include implementing policies, conducting inspections, managing risk assessments, maintaining the H&S culture and following through on action and improvement ideas

Key Accountabilities

Headline roles and responsibilities

  • Responsible for the practical implementation and training and support of all staff in health and safety
    practices, risk assessments, legislation compliance and environmental regulations and obligations.
  • Working with Head of Quality in supporting and improving environmental management plans and
    policy.
  • Working with Head of Quality in supporting and improving health and safety management systems.
  • Overseeing risk audits and assessments to identify risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop, implement and review internal health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for recording results of risk assessments and managing and monitoring the information.
  • Provide relevant advice and support internally in relation to Health and Safety procedures, regulations
    and legislation.
  • Undertake comprehensive investigations when required, producing clear reports in a timely manner,
    with guidance and recommendations and tangible actions.
  • Maintaining a safe and compliant work environment ensuring employees have adequate training and
    that records are accurate, work closely with HR in maintaining these.
  • Maintenance of external accreditations – working closely with Quality and Safety Coordinator, finance
    and HR to keep ahead of all accreditations to avoid expiry
  • Liaise with external auditors, regulatory bodies when required
  • Supporting the Site Operations team with installer training H&S practices
  • Travel to site and suppliers as required.
  • Any other reasonable management instructions

Safety Monitoring and Inspections

  • Conduct regular site, workshop, and office inspections.
  • Oversee contractor and subcontractor safety compliance and review RAMS and control measures.
  • Monitor waste control, fire safety arrangements, and emergency procedures.
  • Run H&S committee meetings/similar forums and follow through on action items.

Incident and investigation management

  • Lead accident and incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and reporting processes.
  • Provide recommendations to prevent recurrence and track corrective actions.
  • Key Performance Indicators – measured and review monthly and quarterly

Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, Experience & Behaviours

Essential

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, EN 1090, and construction product governance.
  • Working knowledge of the Building Safety Act, Golden Thread requirements, and compliance
    obligations.
  • Experience with audits, investigations, root cause analysis and preventive controls.
  • CSCS card (SMSTS/SSSTS preferred).
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation and industry standards.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, safety inspections, and investigations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to influence and support teams.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in construction, manufacturing, or engineering sectors.
  • Proven track record of working effectively with construction procedures
  • Experience in balcony or façade products.
  • Experience undertaking accident and incident investigations
  • Demonstrable experience creating reports from investigation exercises
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or working toward).
  • First aid training or fire marshal experience.
  • IOSH Managing Safely
  • Trained auditor for ISO14001 and ISO45001
